Planning a renovation while living at home

Discuss access, temporary room use and daily handover before work begins.

Map essential daily routines

List the rooms and services your household needs each day. Consider cooking, washing, work, storage and sleeping arrangements separately. Explain which routines can move temporarily and which cannot. Share this with the contractor before deciding the sequence of work. A plan that looks efficient on paper may be difficult if the household has no usable kitchen or bathroom. Ask for a project-specific arrangement rather than assuming every room will remain available throughout.

Agree boundaries and access

Ask which parts of the home will be work areas and how access will be managed. Discuss entrances, deliveries, material storage and parking where relevant. Identify pets, children and household routines as planning considerations without sharing unnecessary personal details. Ask the contractor to explain the proposed separation and cleanup approach. Record who is responsible for moving belongings and when each area must be ready. Written boundaries make it easier to coordinate daily use with the work sequence.

Clarify temporary interruptions

Ask which activities may interrupt room access or services, how much notice is expected and who will communicate changes. Describe any constraints on working hours or access. Request clarification about temporary arrangements rather than assuming the contractor supplies them. Keep a simple contact and decision log so instructions do not depend on several different conversations. If a concealed condition changes the plan, ask for the revised scope and implications before agreeing to additional work.

Plan the return to normal use

Discuss what completed means for each stage: installation, finishing, cleanup and any follow-up items. Ask what information you will receive about installed products and maintenance. Keep a written list of incomplete items with an agreed next step. Separate a room being usable from every finish being complete so expectations remain clear. The renovation professional should confirm the project-specific process. This planning guide does not promise a schedule or replace the written terms you agree with the contractor.
